Periodontal disease (or gum disease) is caused by bacteria, plaque, and tartar buildup. If left untreated, it can damage your gums, causing gum recession and eventually leading to bone loss. The most common symptoms are swollen or bleeding gums and/or loosening of teeth. Gum disease can also increase your risk for stroke, diabetes, and heart disease.
Unfortunately, periodontal disease is extremely common in the United States. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, half of Americans over the age of 30 have periodontitis, the most advanced form of periodontal disease.
This doesn’t have to be your reality! Deep cleanings can help reverse the early stages of periodontal disease, preventing possible tooth loss.
At your initial visit, we will measure your gum pockets and take x-rays to determine whether you will need regular or deep cleaning.
How We Perform Deep Cleanings
We use a local anesthetic for this type of cleaning to make sure you’re comfortable throughout the procedure. Then, we will utilize an ultrasonic scaler to remove plaque and tartar around the gum line. After the plaque is removed, we will go back and smooth the tooth surfaces – this will allow your gums to heal properly and also help to prevent any further progression of gum disease.
