If your molars are particularly cavity-prone, dental sealants are an excellent preventive treatment for protecting your teeth from harmful, cavity-causing bacteria. Dental sealants are a quick and cost-effective treatment option that can save a lot of time and money in the long run! To learn more about our services or schedule your next visit, please contact us!
Dental sealants “seal off” the top of the molars and act as barriers between the surface of the teeth and harmful bacteria. The benefits of dental sealants include:
Most patients have sealants placed right after they have their teeth cleaned, and it’s very easy to add a sealant treatment to the end of a routine dental visit. Once the teeth are squeaky clean, the molars are then dried, and an acid solution is applied to help the sealant bond with the teeth. The teeth are rinsed and dried again, and the sealants are painted on, where they will bond with the tooth and harden. A special curing light may also be used to speed up the process. Many patients find the entire process to be very simple, fast, and easy!
Dental sealants are often recommended for kids, but they can be utilized by both children and adults to keep tooth decay at bay. The first set of molars grows in around age six, which is when a child can get their first dental sealants placed. The second set grows in around age 12, at which time more sealants can be placed. Dental sealants can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years, and our team checks them during routine dental exams to ensure that they are still in good shape. Once they begin to get worn down, we let the patient know and either remove them altogether or remove and replace them.
