Why Root Canals Are Not Scary

Do you experience lingering tooth pain after you drink or eat something cold? Do you feel pain when there is pressure on your tooth? These are just a few signs that could mean you may need root canal treatment.

However, root canals are not as scary as you think! This restorative treatment can remedy your pain while preserving your natural tooth.

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a procedure that is needed when the pulp, the soft tissue inside a tooth, becomes damaged or infected as a result of decay or injury to the tooth. The pulp is removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned out. After, the tooth is filled with a special dental material and sealed. Sometimes a crown is needed if the tooth requires additional fortification.

This procedure is not as scary as you might think! In fact, this restorative treatment can remedy your pain while preserving your natural tooth so you don’t need to get an extraction.

Root Canal Procedure

Root canal therapy is a nearly painless procedure; the most you should feel is a bit of pressure. Local anesthetic numbs the area around the affected tooth. Dental sedation can also help you feel calm and relaxed.

For a few days after, you may experience soreness and discomfort as you heal. Your dental team will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions based on your situation to help you have avoid any complications.

Common Signs of Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, can have serious consequences not just for your dental health but your overall health. If you notice any of the following warning signs, we recommend scheduling a visit with our team!

  1. Change in Gum Color
  2. Healthy gums are supposed to be pink, so if you start to notice that your gums appear bright red, dark red, or even purplish, that can be a sign that they are not as healthy as they should be.

  3. Gum Bleeding
  4. It’s normal to accidentally brush too hard every once in a while and notice a little blood. However, if your gums bleed frequently or every time you brush, that is not a sign of healthy gums. Sores or pus on the gums or in between teeth can occur as well. You should be able to gently brush your teeth and gums without noticing any blood.

  5. Inflammation
  6. If your gums look puffy or swollen or if they are tender to the touch, these indicate they are irritated and inflamed.

  7. Receding Gums & Loose Teeth
  8. As tartar begins to collect underneath the gumline, the gums can begin to pull away from the teeth and expose more of each tooth. Should the gums recede too much, the teeth will not be as stable as they should be, and they can begin to feel loose. When periodontal disease becomes advanced, it can actually lead to one or more teeth falling out.

  9. Persistent Bad Breath
  10. If you notice that your breath is not as fresh as usual or you often have a bad taste in your mouth, it could indicate gum disease.
